What Made It Such A Success?

All great landscape designs have one thing in common – a clear idea of the outcome.

Even before one spoonful of soil is moved, being able to visualise an existing space with a new look, smell and feel through the changing seasons will deliver a better result.

Getting a Better Result:

Many clients simply don’t know where to start or are over run with ideas.

When the phone rang and the Texture Plants Nursery owners told me of their plans, both fear and excitement came knocking simultaneously.

They were entering the inaugural Christchurch Ellerslie International Flower Show 2009.

The Brief:

Texture Plants wanted to create a design that showed their plants off. They wanted to create something that would be both visually stunning and yet have practical appeal. A garden that anyone could see themselves spending and enjoying time in.

Edginess, clean lines, funky design, yet usable and engaging were words that came to mind. Critically it was to be designed to connect to the people not to win a judges award.

In any design there’s always a few key elements, the must haves, and this brief was no different. Lawn, hot tub, some height and a core structural focal point were agreed as essential.

To be an intrinsic part of this was a desired focus on their special style of plants. Designing a concept to enhance, complement and screen, while flaunting a little style, was an exciting challenge.

The Concept:

The space allocated for the display was different from most of my client’s gardens in several ways. There were few limitations apart from size, which is unusual for most residential gardens.

No neighbour’s trees crowding and stealing nutrients. No buildings to shade from sun or shelter from wind. There was also no concern for soil type or frost exposure.

Yet the garden had to deliver. It had to be a design anyone could walk up to and feel drawn to. A silent invitation.

The Reward:

Taking the concept design and bringing it to life in 3 dimensions needed knowledge and skill. Texture Plants and Outerspace Landscapes had these skills in abundance.

Touring around the Show at various times, the overwhelming feeling for this backyard retreat was of beauty and simplicity. It’s appeal was universal and confirmed by the people.

The Award?

No question, there’s a huge level of satisfaction that’s come from my involvement in the concept for this award winning garden and witnessing Texture Plants and Outerspace Landscapes turn it to reality. Yet nothing gives me as much pleasure as the unique intimacy of working on something far more private.

Your garden.
